Earlier this week, we reported that former Fox News host Megyn Kelly was being accused of racism after speaking out against the black national anthem played at the Super Bowl last Sunday. Now, Kelly is being defended by ESPN anchor Stephen A. Smith, who happens to be black.

Smith defends Kelly

Before the Super Bowl last Sunday, Andra Day took the field to perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which the NAACP called the black national anthem in 1919. Kelly later took to social media to say that this song “does not belong.” to the Super Bowl. We already have a National Anthem and EVERYONE is in it.”

In the days since, liberals have been accusing Kelly of being “racist” for saying this, but Smith is having none of it.

“I don’t know Megyn Kelly at all, okay? I don’t think her statement is racist,” Smith said in her eponymous talk earlier this week, according to The New York Post.

“In their eyes, it seems patriotic to me,” he continued. “I think, in his eyes, he is self-righteous. I find it a bit removed from the reality facing black Americans everywhere. “I understood that part, but I can’t talk about it the way I wanted to when there are people out there, from my community, just throwing around the word ‘racist.'”

“You don’t know that about her,” Smith added. “I’m sick and tired of people, especially in the black community, being quick to dismiss the word ‘racism.’ When you throw out the word ‘racism,’ do me a favor: have more evidence before you do so so it can’t be thrown out by plausible deniability or anything else.”

“Megyn Kelly, if you’re watching, you’re listening. I don’t like what you said at all. “I think she seems very insensitive,” she concluded, adding that she has “deep respect” for Kelly.

This is far from the first time Kelly has challenged the left by speaking out against the black national anthem.

“I don’t think the average American, black or white, wants to hear the black national anthem before they hear it… and it’s not an offense against people of color, we’re one country,” Kelly said in 2021, according to Yahoo News. “We don’t need separate hymns.”

“It’s an opportunity to unite,” he added. “Celebrate America…and then play a sports game. And not shove politics or divisive cultural issues down the throats of viewers looking for an escape.”

Kelly made similar comments last year, when he harshly criticized the black national anthem after Sheryl Lee Ralph performed it at the Super Bowl.

“And then, of course, we had to have the black national anthem in addition to the normal national anthem, which is totally divisive,” Kelly said at the time. “There is no reason to sing a black national anthem before the Super Bowl.”

“But there is a national anthem. It unites us all. “It is about love of country,” he added. “It makes no sense to divide us by race, to enter into something that is already unifying us as a country.”

Leftists can call Kelly “racist” all they want, but that won’t change the fact that she is right that there is only one national anthem, and it’s “The Star Spangled Banner.” We applaud Smith for having the guts to defend Kelly against the cancel culture mob, and hope more public figures do the same when it comes to performing the Black national anthem!
